It is more difficult to precisely position
connector leads on pads, and to keep them in place until they are soldered,
than to insert the leads through holes. The larger the connector lead
count, and the smaller the lead pitch, the more difficult the task becomes.
Automated pick and place machines can effectively resolve this problem
with consistent, precise placement. For small volumes where hand assembly
is required, optional alignment pins can help assure the leads are properly
positioned on the pads for high quality solder fillets. Metal clips
with flexible barbs can be used to provide additional mechanical strength
to the interconnect system.
